Nothing New Under The Sun (16"x16")
When I paint animals they always exude so much wisdom. Bison usually feel calm and steady to me. Maybe, they are like a lion, they know their strength and they know what they don’t need to be afraid of. I’m guessing we could learn something from that. This painting is titled “Nothing New Under The Sun,” referencing a line in Ecclesiastes. It’s somewhat ironic in some ways because it feels hopeful to me, yet most people read Ecclesiastes as quite depressing. It is in some ways, but in others it is about surrender to what is and acknowledgement of our shared struggle as humans. A connectedness that’s comes from being bound by the specific and unpredictable ties of a life lived. To me, this painting represents a patient and curios surrender to that journey, a hopefulness and an experiential apprehension. Mostly hopeful though— because knowing one’s strength, one’s self, one’s values and learning to patiently trust the process and oneself is an incredibly beautiful and empowering thing!
